Not every grown child becomes the
success in life we envisioned, and some
can end up with serious problems.
As a result, parents can feel guilt, despair and responsibility.
What can you do?
-Avoid blaming anyone, including yourself, your spouse and your
child.
-Accept that your influence is limited.
-Whatever the issue-drugs,abusive relationship,and eating
disorder,
depression-inform yourself via the internet or library.
-Take a look at whether you may be unconsciously sabotaging
their progress.
-Stay emotionally close to your child but emotionally distant
from the problem.
Taking responsibility for it means your child won't ever have
to.
-If your child has a history of financial irresponsibility, don't
just give money.
Offer to pay for something specific: a training course, a rehab
program.
-Share your disappointment with a sympathetic friend.
-Take care of yourself, so you can get on with your own life. |
